Greetings.
My name is Ann Fernald and I live out on Frenchboro. We have an 8-10 yr.old cat, Honey Bunches, who in May was due for her Rabies,Leukemia and Fel. Distemper shots. For years we have taken her to the Small Animal Clinic in Ellsworth for these but would love to take advantage of your dockside services out here. She had already gotten her shots last year before we knew of you and the Sea Keeper. If possible, we would like to make an appt.for her on July 3rd but I do need to be at work at 11:00 on that day(island P.O.). Is there a time available before 10:30? She is a lazy somewhat outdoor cat and she does usually get a pill for intestinal parasites since she might decide to munch on a mouse and has been known to snag a bird.
If there is not a time available on the 3rd, then perhaps the 26th?
Thank you and hope you are having a glorious beginning to Summer.
Ann

P.S. I tried emailing directly to you but it failed stating that I had an invalid domain name. Is your email address:shively.ma@yahoo .com? Or perhaps I didn't write it down correctly.
Thank you in advance for your reply.

Hi Dr. Shively,

I have been living on Swan's Island for the past three years. I recently moved off to return to school to pursue my dream of being a veterinarian. I plan on offering house visits to farm and small animals and also holistic services. Not two weeks ago I mentioned to my boyfriend how nice it would be to have a vet traveling to the islands to offer services to those who would otherwise have to give up a large chunk of time/money in order to have an appointment off-island. Then he called within the week and told me about the announcement you had posted in the Swans Island post office offering these very services. How wonderful and coincidental! Just wanted to let you know that I think what you are doing is great, and an amazing benefit to the island communities. I still have two to two and a half years left to my undergraduate before going to veterinary school. In this time I need to put in at least 300 hours working with a veterinarian. I am wondering if I might be able to work with you next summer on the islands. This would allow me to be a part of something I believe in and also be able to live on the island for the summer. Just something to think about for next summer, I am currently taking summer classes at UMaine this summer, so don't have a lot of free time now, although I try to make it down at least every other weekend. Perhaps I will be able to meet up with you sometime and discuss things further if you would be interested in having another set of hands to help out next summer. My contact information is :
Andrea Bond

Thank you very much, and also thanks for offering the island folk a much needed service!

I noticed that you are interested in reducing energy consumption through adaptive fishing strategies and information-sharing. NOAA is planning a symposium on energy use in fisheries and I would love to hear more about any specific efforts underway in the Gulf of Maine. Also, I invite you and interested colleagues to join an online professional network on the topic of energy use in fisheries. The network promotes increased efficiency through discussion and the sharing of resources.
Best Regards
